Anson Douglas

Anson is a disputes specialist with a primary focus on complex commercial litigation and international arbitration. His practice spans a broad range of sectors, with a particular focus on fintech, white collar crimes, regulatory investigations, contentious insolvency, and debt and asset recovery. He is also well experienced in shipping disputes, and oil and gas matters. He is well versed in emergency relief applications, including Mareva and proprietary injunctions.

He has acted in high-stakes disputes across multiple jurisdictions, including advising a Fortune 500 company in recovering US$400 million in fraudulently acquired assets, and representing a global shipowner in the concurrent arrest of a fleet of oil tankers in multiple jurisdictions, as well as conducting global enforcement and insolvency actions. His clients include major financial institutions, state-owned enterprises, international law firms, multinational corporations and fintech companies.

Anson has extensive arbitration experience under HKIAC, ICC, SIAC, LMAA, and UNCITRAL rules, covering multi-national joint ventures, cross-border debt recovery, oil and gas operations, and maritime disputes. His arbitration work frequently involves coordinating multi-jurisdictional strategy and managing parallel court and tribunal processes.

Anson is also an accomplished mooter, having won multiple awards at local and international competitions, including the Best Oralist and Best Team prizes at the Foreign Direct Investment International Arbitration Moot (Asia-Pacific).

Prior to joining Tang and Co. (in association with Helmsman LLC), Anson practised at leading international and regional disputes law firms. He has also served as a moot coach at the University of Hong Kong and contributed to academic publications on cross-border arbitration.

Anson holds a Juris Doctor and PCLL from the University of Hong Kong, and a Bachelor of Journalism with a second major in Global Studies. He is fluent in English, Cantonese, and Mandarin.


Experience / Representative Matters

Cross-border debt and asset recovery/defence

Acted for a multinational corporation in recovering over US$400 million in fraudulently acquired assets, coordinating tracing and enforcement across multiple jurisdictions

Represented a US bank in receivership in recovering over US$50 million in misappropriated trust funds and debt, involving fraud and embezzlement

Defended a Hong Kong-listed Mainland property developer in a contested winding-up petition concerning over HK$200 million in unpaid bonds, with ancillary claims against directors

Regularly instructed by Hong Kong commercial banks and Chinese state-owned enterprises in debt recovery, contentious insolvency, asset tracing and emergency preservation

Shipping, oil and gas

Represented a global shipowner/financier in the concurrent arrest of a fleet of oil tankers in multiple jurisdictions, the enforcement of contracts through global litigation and arbitration, and subsequent cross-border insolvency claims

Represented a consortium of banks in enforcing a ship mortgage in the arrest and judicial sale of a bulk carrier in Hong Kong

Represented an oil and gas JV investor in an UNCITRAL arbitration concerning mismanagement and cost-allocation issues over the joint exploitation of an oilfield

Acted for an engineering and development company in an IP infringement claim concerning an offshore MOPU development project that fell through
