Arjun Joseph Mital

Arjun joined Helmsman in 2024 as part of the Shipping and Commodities Practice Group. With over a decade of experience, his expertise is in shipping and international trade law, covering contentious and advisory work on a broad range of matters. He is dual qualified to practice as a Solicitor in England and Wales and as an Advocate in India. He is a registered Foreign Lawyer in Singapore. 

Prior to Helmsman, Arjun was based in Dubai as the senior legal counsel at one of the largest buyer of ships and offshore assets and its ship-owning division. He has significant experience in ship sale and purchase on both transactional and dispute matters, having worked on over 300 ship sale-purchases. 

Arjun began his career as an advocate at India’s largest shipping law firm, representing shipowners and P&I Clubs before various courts and tribunals on advisory and contentious issues, covering dry and wet matters. 

Arjun has considerable litigation experience in shipping and trade disputes, handling court matters in various maritime jurisdictions globally and arbitrations in London, Singapore and India under the LMAA, SCMA, SIAC and ICA. He regularly advises on issues of insurance, P&I and FD&D claims, admiralty law, contract management, sale-purchase, commodities and ship financing. 

Arjun graduated law from NLU Jodhpur, India with international law honours and obtained a Masters in International Maritime Law from Swansea University with distinction and the HFW Prize in Oil and Gas.
