Chloe Chan

Chloe is a specialist shipping and commodities lawyer. At the start of her legal career, she was a trainee solicitor at an established commercial law firm in Hong Kong with presence in Mainland China and in Japan. Prior to joining Helmsman, Chloe practised law at a boutique shipping law firm in Hong Kong.

She is experienced in a full range of shipping and commodities trading disputes, including charterparties and bills of lading disputes. She has represented clients in Hong Kong court proceedings as well as arbitrations under various institutional rules, including the LMAA, SCMA and HKIAC.

Chloe was awarded the School of Law Admission Scholarship to pursue her Bachelor of Laws at the City University of Hong Kong.

Chloe is a registered Foreign Lawyer in Singapore and a qualified Solicitor in Hong Kong and England & Wales.

Chloe is effectively trilingual in Cantonese, Mandarin Chinese and English.


Experience / Representative Matters

Shipping

Acted for the trading and chartering arms of a multinational company in a high-value coal liquefaction dispute involving complex issues of dangerous cargoes and vessel seaworthiness. 

Defended the dry bulk shipping arm of a substantial public company against claims relating to hull fouling and underperformance. The dispute involved novel issues of contractual interpretation of hull warranty clauses and quantification of damages. 

Acted for the chartering arm of a regional trading company in a dispute concerning death and personal injuries of stevedores in China caused by oxygen depletion during the discharge of forest products.

Acted for an offshore engineering company in a dispute exceeding RMB 57 million against a PRC state-owned enterprise, arising from an offshore LNG terminal project in Hong Kong. 

Assisted in advising the lead underwriter of a Hong Kong statutory body in relation to a tortious claim exceeding HKD 110 million arising from an allision. 

Assisted in handling a claim potentially in excess of USD 200 million by a shipowner and an insurer arising from a major allision and resultant oil spill in Singapore. 

Commodities

Assisting in advising a multinational commodities trading company on a multi-million dollar dispute arising out of several oil sale and purchase contracts, involving complex factual, legal and expert issues oil trading practices. The dispute interacts with various ongoing civil and criminal lawsuits in Singapore.
