Irvin is a commercial disputes lawyer, with particular expertise at navigating complex, cross-border legal matters for multinational clients. His practice spans commercial litigation in Singapore’s courts and international arbitration under various institutional rules, including the SIAC, LCIA and SCMA.

Prior to joining Helmsman, Irvin honed his expertise at leading international and local law firms, where he gained experience across a diverse range of legal issues, including insolvency, employment law and general commercial disputes.

Irvin graduated Summa Cum Laude (with the Highest Distinction) from Singapore Management University. He was a recipient of the TSMP Law Corporation Prize for the Best Law Student in Ethics and Social Responsibility. A passionate advocate, he excelled as a mooter, representing his university in numerous prestigious competitions, including the Attorney-General’s Cup, Asia Cup International Law Moot, and the Fletcher International Insolvency Law Moot.

Irvin is fluent in English and Mandarin. He is qualified as an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore.

Experience / Representative Matters

Commercial Disputes

Represented a major Chinese state-owned enterprise in a multi-million-dollar arbitration for the recovery of unpaid fees relating to the transshipment of bauxite and breaches of the implied duty of cooperation.

Acted for one of the world’s largest commodity suppliers in Singapore court proceedings concerning competing claims over nickel cargo.

Acted in the high-profile Marine Honour allision by advising on the extent of liability, assisting in the consolidation of claims received, and liaising with the Claims Submission Office set up by the International Oil Pollution Compensation Funds.

Represented an employer in a dispute against a former clinic manager over the unauthorised transfers of money disguised as legitimate transactions.

Acted for various clients on contentious employment matters including claims from a former employee for liquidated damages and unpaid bonus, termination of a pregnant employee, and breaches of confidentiality and the duty of good faith and fidelity

Advised various employers and employees on the rights and obligations arising out of employment law in Singapore, and assist in the drafting of employment contracts, employment handbooks and legal opinions.

Advised various clients on a variety of intellectual property issues, including the drafting of a film licensing agreement, and infringement of a patent.
