Leanne Cheng

Leanne specialises in shipping, international trade and commodities disputes. She regularly acts for clients in the Singapore courts as well as in international arbitrations (including under the SIAC, SCMA, ICC, LCIA and LMAA, etc.). Prior to joining Helmsman, she started her legal career first as a Justices’ Law Clerk and then as an Assistant Registrar at the Supreme Court of Singapore. As an Assistant Registrar, she heard and managed a wide variety of civil cases and applications in the Shipping, Intellectual Property, Information Technology and Tax division. She was also part of the Registry team assisting in Court of Appeal matters, Singapore International Commercial Court matters, and Enforcement matters.

Leanne read law at the National University of Singapore, graduating with First Class Honours. She was placed on the Overall Dean’s List for academic distinction based on 4 years of undergraduate studies. She was also awarded the Tan Sook Yee Prize in Property Law and the Singapore Mediation Centre Prize for Mediation. She placed Joint 3rd position in her Singapore Bar exams, having been awarded three Distinctions including a Distinction in Civil Litigation Practice.

Leanne is an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. She is also an Accredited Mediator with the Singapore Mediation Centre.


Experience / Representative Matters

Shipping

Acted for buyers/shipowners in SIAC arbitration against a shipyard concerning the construction, sale and delivery of three LNG carriers valued at approximately USD 870 million.

Acted for a Chinese shipping conglomerate in a dispute arising out of a collision between an oil tanker and a tug and barge in Indonesian waters, including procuring the release of an arrested vessel and commencing proceedings in the Singapore High Court.

Acting for owners and insurers of “MARINE HONOUR” in the high-profile oil spill case arising from the allision between “VOX MAXIMA” and “MARINE HONOUR”, including the constitution of the first CLC limitation fund in Singapore. 

Commodities

Acting for a respondent in SIAC arbitration concerning the sale and purchase of oil cargos valued at approximately USD 70 million. 

Acting for a defendant in a Singapore High Court dispute over competing ownership claims to a nickel cargo valued at over USD 10 million.

Successfully acted for a Chinese trading house in a SIAC arbitration over a claim of approximately USD 7 million in respect of off-specification iron ore loaded and shipped from Guinea, challenging the validity of the quality survey certificate issued at the load port.
