Chong Jun Tang

Chong Jun is a commercial dispute resolution and shipping and international trade lawyer, with extensive experience in litigation, arbitration, mediation and advisory work.

Chong Jun is often instructed to advise and represent clients in complex, high value, cross-border disputes. He engages in a range of shipping and international trade work including vessel sale and purchase disputes, charterparty disputes, cargo damage/loss claims, shipbuilding and ship repair disputes, vessel mortgage enforcement, and commodities disputes. His experience in commercial disputes includes investor-state arbitration, shareholders and directors’ disputes, insolvency and restructuring, fraud recovery, debt recovery and enforcement, and cryptocurrency disputes.

Chong Jun is qualified to practise law in both Hong Kong and Singapore. He is also a Fellow of the Hong Kong Institute of Arbitrators. Chong Jun speaks English and Mandarin Chinese.

Experience / Representative Matters

Commercial Disputes

Advised and represented Quaestus Capital Pte. Ltd. to successfully obtain an injunction against Everton Associates Limited and Axis Capital Markets Limited. This prevented the sale and disposal of substantial shares in a Hong Kong public listed entity, China Metal Resources Utilization Limited, or its proceeds thereof up to the sum of about USD 36 million. 

Advised and assisted China Base and Lo Ching in successfully challenging the jurisdiction of the High Court of Hong Kong. The claim was brought by Shanghai Gopher Asset Management Co. Limited, in connection with the Camsing litigation, with these claims being more than RMB 4 billion (about USD 550 million). 

Acted for an unsecured creditor in substantial recovery of more than USD 20 million in connection with the Brightoil litigation, including invoking and arguing the marshalling doctrine against an international bank for the first time in Hong Kong. 

Vessel Sale and Purchase

Represented and advised buyers of a capesize bulk carrier, M/V “Lila Lisbon”, in an LMAA arbitration against sellers, with a substantial award obtained in the English arbitral proceedings. The English High Court decision has been reported in [2024] EWHC 2075 (Comm) and [2025] 1 Lloyd’s Rep 101 and is currently the subject of an appeal before the English Court of Appeal. 

Representing and advising sellers defend against the claims of a buyer in a Hong Kong seated ad hoc arbitration for alleged delay or failure to deliver a vessel under an MOA (NSF Saleform 2012).

Acted for a successful bidder in the purchase of M/V “Mirna” in a Hong Kong judicial sale, including postponing time (unprecedented) for payment of price and delivery of the vessel on two occasions, and repatriation of crew.

Partnership and Company Disputes

Representing and advising the partner of a Mozambique mining business in a Hong Kong High Court action to recover assets of the partnership, with claims exceeding USD 200 million. We are also assisting the same individual bring an unfair prejudice petition arising out of actions taken by a Hong Kong holding company that has an interest in this Mozambique mining business. 

Investment Treaty Arbitration

Represented and advised a Chinese national (deceased) in his investor-state arbitration claims against a European state for inter alia expropriation of property following a public raid on his Nordic-China Centre (wholesale distribution and logistics centre).
