Weitao Wong

Weitao is a disputes lawyer with a specialised focus on shipping, commodities, and complex commercial disputes.

Prior to joining Helmsman, Weitao was a Justices’ Law Clerk at the Supreme Court of Singapore where he handled a variety of complex civil, commercial and criminal matters. He was also a Visiting Researcher with the Centre for Maritime Law at the Faculty of Law, National University of Singapore.

Weitao read law at the National University of Singapore, graduating with First Class Honours. He was placed on the Dean’s List for his third and fourth years, and on the Overall Dean’s List. He was the recipient of many academic awards, including the  Adrian Clark Memorial Medal for Best Student in Final Year Examinations, the Clifford Chance Prize in International Commercial Arbitration, and the Maritime Law Association of Singapore Prizes in Carriage of Goods by Sea and Charter parties. He placed joint-5th in Part B of the Singapore Bar Examinations, having been awarded two distinctions.

Weitao has also published articles and case comments in the Lloyd’s Maritime and Commercial Law Quarterly, the Journal of Private International Law and the Journal of International Maritime Law.

Weitao is an Advocate and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Singapore. He is proficient in English and Mandarin.

Acting for a major container line in a cargo claim before the Singapore High Court arising from damage to agricultural products carried in refrigerated containers.

Acting for owners of a tug and barge in proceedings before the Singapore High Court arising out of a collision with a bulk carrier in Guinean waters.

Acting for disponent owners in an SCMA arbitration concerning a voyage charterparty dispute arising from an Indonesian palm oil export ban.

Acting for a multinational commodities trading company in arbitration proceedings concerning damage to a cargo of coal.
